6 Rules for Business Cards
1. Don't resort to a do-it-yourself approach when it comes to your business cards. Unless you actually have an eye for graphic design or are a graphic artist by profession, you'll risk turning your card into a technicolor nightmare or a half-baked creation that doesn't look like it should be taken seriously. Your business card is an asset that's worth investing on.
2. Check for typos. Misspelled words and punctuation marks that are either lost or out of place present a sloppy picture. Make sure that there are no such mistakes on your cards.
3. Check all data. Verify the accuracy of the information you place on your card. A mistake like having the wrong number listed on your card could lead to you missing opportunities and contacts. It is not a bad idea to place the specific times when you would be taking calls so that people know when they can get in touch with you.
4. Don't get cute. If you're self-employed or if you do freelance work, resist the urge to get cute by billing yourself as a "Dream Catcher," "Businessman by Day, Superhero by Night," or "Superman's Best Friend." These 'slogans' won't help you grow your business. Keep it straight and simple. Consider this: "Drew Haugen, Freelance Web Developer" or "Cindy Olson, Owner, Internet Services."
5. Keep it clean. Smudges, stains, and tears will turn anything into an eyesore. So, make sure that your business card is in perfec condition. Get yourself a business card holder or a business card case to keep them available at all times. Dog-eared cards are also not acceptable.
6. Don't forget it. Perhaps the biggest business card mistake that you can ever commit is to forget to bring your cards. You should always have several ready in your briefcase, purse and wallet. A forgotten business card can mean a lost opportunty for you.
